Master’s degrees

Compare master’s degree options

Compare master's degree costs by program. Check prerequisites, practicums or residencies, and licensure rules with your state board before you apply.

Affordable Degree GuideEditorial policy

Before you compare prices, check what each master’s program asks of you. Many want a bachelor’s degree in a related field, and some require prerequisite courses first. Those courses can add credits and cost to your plan.

Next, look for hands-on requirements. Counseling, psychology and similar programs often include a practicum, internship or residency. You may need to arrange a site near you, take time off work, or attend campus in person even when classes are online. Ask how the school helps with placements.

If the job you want requires a license, such as counseling, confirm the requirements with your state licensing board before you enroll. Rules differ from state to state. A program that fits one state’s requirements may not fit another’s, and an accredited program does not guarantee a license.
