Colleges to explore
Ohio’s community colleges do not all price the same way. Two of the four below publish a lower rate for their own county, and two publish one rate that applies to everyone in Ohio. Add the online course fee if you plan to take classes online.
| College | Why it may belong on your shortlist | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| Columbus State Community College | Columbus college publishing one Ohio resident rate for the whole state | $202.93 per credit for Ohio residents ($182.43 instructional plus $20.50 general) and $415.04 for non-Ohio U.S. residents, Autumn 2026 |
| Sinclair Community College | Dayton college funded partly by a county levy | $156.03 per credit in Montgomery County, $203.28 for other Ohio residents, $359.40 out of state for Fall 2026; Spring 2027 is $161.03, $208.28 and $374.40 |
| Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) | Cleveland college with a three-tier per-credit schedule | $139.54 per credit for county residents, $169.08 for other Ohio residents, $306.19 out of state for 2026-2027 |
| Stark State College | Northeast Ohio college publishing one in-state total | $219.60 per credit in state effective fall 2026 ($126.50 instructional plus $93.10 general); out of state adds $129 per credit |
| The Ohio State University | Flagship four-year whose guarantee freezes an entering class’s rates for four years | No single per-credit rate: rates are published per entering-class cohort on the guarantee page |
Conditions that change what you pay
- Columbus State Community College: Online and blended courses add $10 per credit. A one-time $50 Application, Records, and ID fee applies, and the technology and facilities fee is charged by credit-load tier and not in summer.
- Sinclair Community College: Online courses add $7.50 per credit and an $85 auxiliary services fee is charged per term. Per state law, only Montgomery County residents get the lower rate.
- Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C): Online classes add $10 per credit, and an institutional fee is charged each semester: $10 for 1-3 credits, $50 for 4-11, $70 for 12 or more.
- Stark State College: Distance learning fees are $10 per credit hour for W3 and W4 courses and $5 for W2, plus a $35 per-semester maintenance and campus security fee and a one-time $95 processing fee.
- The Ohio State University: The guarantee sets tuition and mandatory fees for each entering class, and for Ohio residents includes housing and dining. It does not apply to students who first enrolled in college before 2017, non-Ohio residents, international students, non-degree-seeking students, exchange students or pre-enrollment program participants.
Sinclair and Tri-C charge less inside their home counties, and that difference is a legal residency restriction rather than a discount you can ask for. Columbus State publishes one Ohio resident rate and Stark State publishes one in-state total, so neither of those two shows a county difference.
Columbus State also publishes an approximate full-time annual cost of $6,088 for the 2026 academic year, stated as representing 30 enrolled credit hours. That is an annual figure on a full-time basis, not a per-credit rate, so do not divide it up or compare it directly with the per-credit numbers above.
Delivery still costs something in time as well as money. Tri-C’s catalog notes that fully online asynchronous courses “may have scheduled online or in-person proctored exams,” so check your course format before you plan around an online-only schedule.
Ohio state aid: what OCOG does and does not cover
Ohio University’s state-grant guidance describes the Ohio College Opportunity Grant as “a state-funded grant program offered to residents of the state of Ohio only.” It is a useful institutional starting point for questions, not a statewide award calculator.
The Ohio Department of Higher Education publishes the program terms: OCOG provides financial assistance to Ohio residents with demonstrated financial need as determined by the FAFSA. Eligibility requires Ohio residency; pursuit of an associate degree, first bachelor’s degree or nurse diploma program; a completed FAFSA; a Student Aid Index of $3,750 or less with a household income of $96,000 or less; and satisfactory academic progress at your institution. There is no separate OCOG application — the state page says the deadline to submit the FAFSA is October 1st of each year.
Awards are set annually, and the state pages do not all show the same year. The program page still shows 2023-2024 maximums: $4,000 at Ohio public universities, $5,000 at private non-profit colleges, $2,000 at private for-profit colleges and $600 at select Pennsylvania colleges. The current 2026-2027 award chart lists $4,000.00 for other public main campuses, stepping down to $3,000.00, $2,000.00 and $1,000.00 by enrollment status; $5,000.00 at other private non-profit institutions; and $0.00 for community colleges at every enrollment level. That last line matters: OCOG is generally not available to you if you attend an Ohio community college or a regional campus of an Ohio public university. Ask the financial aid office which chart row applies to your school and aid year before you subtract anything from a budget. Do not subtract an assumed grant from a completion budget merely because you live in Ohio; a school’s actual aid offer is separate from your FAFSA estimates and from your tuition classification.
Ohio residency is its own determination
Ohio Administrative Code rule 3333-1-10 sets residency rules for state subsidy and tuition surcharge purposes. One category concerns twelve consecutive months of residence before enrollment, but the rule also distinguishes residence primarily for education and includes other categories and exceptions. A move to Ohio or an address alone is not enough to determine an institution’s classification.
Ask the institution which category it applies to you and what documentation it requires. Residency for state aid and residency for tuition are decided separately, so ask about both.
What to do next in Ohio
- Confirm whether your college has a county-based rate before you assume the resident price applies to you.
- Add the online course fee for any course you plan to take online, and check whether your program requires proctored exams.
- Ask which OCOG row matches your college and enrollment level, and confirm the current chart for your aid year.
- If you are comparing a campus four-year, ask whether a tuition guarantee covers your entering class and what it leaves out.
- Request the degree requirements, delivery conditions, applicable term tuition and required fees. Ask whether the bill changes with credit load, course category, campus or online enrollment. A semester bill should not be divided into a made-up per-credit rate and then multiplied across a whole degree.
- Get a written transfer evaluation before relying on a shorter completion plan. Use our methodology and FAFSA guide to separate price assumptions from the school’s decisions.
