Start your shortlist with these nine options. Each row names the route the college serves and the price the college itself publishes.

Two cautions apply to every row. A university’s annual estimate bundles housing and food, so treat it as a planning budget rather than a per-credit price. Community-college rates follow the district you live in, not just the state: Austin Community College charges Texas residents outside its district an extra $201 per credit hour (Austin Community College), and Dallas College’s $99 rate applies only inside Dallas County (Dallas College). Repeating a course can cost more there too: Dallas College “may apply” an extra $50 per credit hour to courses attempted three or more times (Dallas College).

• Lamar University: campus tuition excludes mandatory fees, which mix per-credit and flat term charges ($1,338.32 of fees on a 12-hour resident load). The online BBA price is a different product: the per-credit rate includes university and distance-learning fees, the degree is 120 credit hours, and up to 90 transfer hours are accepted. The online page states one rate and names no residency difference, so ask before assuming the online price is residency-blind. Rates can change by Board of Regents or Texas Legislature action.
• Texas Woman’s University: tuition adds a per-credit surcharge by subject: undergraduate nursing courses add $90.00 a credit hour, health studies $40.00, education $30.00 and undergraduate business and HCA courses $20.00. Its fixed tuition plan ($288.88 a credit hour for students entering Fall 2023 through Spring 2027) covers Board Designated Tuition only, needs Texas residency and must be chosen by the first-semester census day. The BS in Education and BS in Child Development are fully online but still require student teaching or field experience hours completed near you.
• UT Permian Basin: the school’s own pages disagree about the online fee column. The online tuition page says the online program fee replaces athletics, technology, library, medical services, student services and student multipurpose center fees, while the fee explanation page adds athletics, library, technology, advising and medical fees on the same per-credit rate. Select upper-level business, nursing and engineering courses also carry $30.00 a credit hour differential tuition. Ask which fee set bills to your program.

Residency first, then the school’s own estimate

Texas has no single price: each public university sets its tuition within state rules, and your residency classification decides which rate applies to you.

Texas law “classifies each person who applies for admission to a Texas public college or university as: A resident of Texas [or] A non-resident,” and that classification—not a Texas mailing address—determines whether you pay in-state or out-of-state tuition (Texas State University Admissions). Practical points from the same official page:

• The standards are set by Chapter 21 of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Rules and “are different from residency rules for voting, obtaining a Texas driver’s license, or tax purposes.”
• The university makes an initial determination from your admission application, and it “will remain on your student record and continue each semester in which you are enrolled, if no changes are made.”
• Texas State warns that “the total nonresident tuition and fees for a typical full course load at Texas State University can be more than $12,000 per semester.”
• Residency also controls access to state-awarded financial aid: “Being a resident also qualifies you to apply for financial aid awarded by the state.”

Do not assume your classification: the page explicitly says “Do not assume you will be classified as a resident. Qualifying Texas residents can be classified as nonresidents, based on the information they provide on their applications.”

At UT Austin, the flat rate depends on your college and covers mandatory fees and college course fees, but not the general deposit or international student fees (UT Austin tuition). Its 2026-27 cost of attendance lists resident tuition of $10,858-$13,576 a year based on 12-hour enrollment, which is two of those flat-rate charges (UT Austin cost of attendance). Texas A&M’s variable-rate tuition stays unchanged through 2026-2027 (Texas A&M tuition freeze), and its rate-plan page shows a locked-rate example of $6,094.01 a semester. Also at UT Austin, “all resident undergraduate academic costs, including tuition, mandatory academic fees, all academic-related general fees, and college course fees, have been frozen for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic years,” while the UT System Board of Regents sets tuition (UT Austin Tuition Rates). At the University of Houston, the per-credit line “does not include required fees such as the Student Services Fee, Extended Access Fee, Recreation and Wellness Center Fee and UC Fee,” so the published rate is not the whole bill (University of Houston).

Texas State’s 2026-2027 estimate, item by item

Texas State University publishes an estimated annual cost of attendance for 2026-2027 (Cost of Attendance):

This is an annual estimate based on 15 credit hours per fall and spring semester with on-campus living—Texas State says so itself. It is not a per-credit price. Your own estimate changes with your residency classification, credit load, housing choice, and program.

At Texas A&M, the catalog’s nine-month estimate of about $33,180 for in-state residents and $62,272 for non-residents is also a budget that includes housing and food, books, transportation and miscellaneous expenses (Texas A&M). Two charges can move that number: distance education courses carry a differential tuition ranging from $40 to $550 per semester credit hour (Texas A&M), and college program fees differ sharply by college, from $100.00 for Agriculture and Life Sciences and $20.00 for Business to $11.00 for Arts and Sciences (Texas A&M Student Business Services). Ask the bursar which fee code your major carries.

Paying with Texas aid

Texas State’s official aid page defines grants as “gift aid you do not need to repay. Based on financial need,” and separates them from work-study (aid you earn) and federal or alternative loans (Types of Aid). The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board says “State financial aid programs require that a student is a Resident of Texas.” Students who do not file a FAFSA “may complete a TASFA to be considered for state financial aid programs”, and a FAFSA filer “should not complete a TASFA”. It adds that “Deadlines vary by institution”. Many colleges use “the state priority deadline of January 15 for the upcoming award year”, but “The priority deadline is not a hard deadline” (TASFA). Meeting the residency rule does not by itself qualify you for any particular grant. Confirm each program’s current terms with the coordinating board and your college’s aid office.

What to do next in Texas

1. Answer every residency question on your admission application completely; your classification is set from that application and stays on your record.
2. Ask the university’s admissions or registrar office for a residency review before you budget, especially if your family recently moved to Texas.
3. Pull each school’s own rate page rather than comparing one statewide number, and for a community college confirm which district rate applies to your address.
4. Use a published annual cost-of-attendance estimate (like the Texas State table above) as a planning figure, not a per-credit rate, and confirm the current year’s numbers with the bursar.
5. File the FAFSA (or the TASFA if you do not file a FAFSA), ask your college which priority date it uses, and check each university’s own aid pages for the state and institutional grants it participates in.
